What happens when we're anxious?

When we're anxious, our sympathetic nervous system releases a hormone called adrenaline, which causes the following changes:

  • Our heart rate and blood pressure increase
  • The blood flow to our muscles increases
  • Our breathing gets faster
  • Our skin produces more sweat
  • Our senses become sharper
  • Our body hair may stand on end
  • Our ability to concentrate is reduced
  • Our ability to solve problems is reduced
